Moving to Svenljunga – Education & Childcare

Preschool and Childcare (Förskola och fritidshem)

In Sweden, children are guaranteed a place in a preschool (förskola) from the age of 1 if their parents work, study, or are actively looking for work.

  • Eligibility and Conditions: Children aged 1–5 are entitled to childcare if parents work or study. If you are unemployed or on parental leave with a sibling, your child is entitled to 15 hours of preschool per week.
  • Free General Preschool: From autumn the year your child turns 3, they are entitled to 525 hours of free preschool per year (allmän förskola, 15 hours a week during the school terms).
  • After-school Clubs: Children aged 6–13 can attend an after-school club (fritidshem or fritids) before and after school hours if parents work or study.
  • Fees: Svenljunga Municipality applies a maximum fee system (maxtaxa). The fee is based on your household's total income and the number of children you have enrolled.
  • Processing Time: The municipality guarantees a preschool place within 4 months of receiving your application.
  • How to Apply: If you do not have a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) or a Swedish BankID, you cannot use our e-service. Instead, you must apply using a paper form.

Compulsory School (Grundskola)

Education is compulsory in Sweden for all children from the year they turn 6 (pre-school class, förskoleklass) until they finish grade 9 (around age 16).

  • Eligibility and Conditions: All children residing in Svenljunga Municipality have the right and obligation to attend compulsory school. School education is free of charge, including school lunches.
  • Processing Time: School placement is processed as soon as possible upon your arrival and registration in the municipality.
  • How to Apply: To enroll a child who does not yet have a Swedish personal identity number, parents must contact the municipality directly.

Adult Education and Swedish for Immigrants (SFI)

Svenljunga offers adult education (Komvux) and Swedish language courses for international residents.

  • Eligibility and Conditions: If you are an EU/EEA citizen residing in Svenljunga, you have the right to study Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) for free. You must be at least 16 years old.
  • Fees: SFI and municipal adult education courses are free of charge. You pay only for your own study materials/textbooks if required.
  • Processing Time: Applications for SFI are processed continuously, and courses usually start several times a year.
